What Technology Can’t Do

April 13, 2012

Today, we expect technology to solve our problems. Here’s the thing: it won’t. It might help us get there, but the technology itself won’t solve our deepest problems, no matter how much we’d like it to. While Technology Uninhibited marvels over our technological progress and the amazing good that technology can do, it has also stressed the importance of personal responsibility. In this vein, I’ve compiled a list of things that technology can’t do, not to disparage technology, but to once again emphasize the importance of human agency and action.

Technology cannot:

  • Raise our children.
  • Exercise for us.
  • Do our everyday work.
  • Solve our problems.
  • Give us meaningful personal advice.
  • Give us back our time.
  • Find us a spouse.
  • Intervene to save a life.
  • Make us happy.
  • Do our homework.
  • Take care of our elderly parents.
  • Provide companionship.
  • Have a face-to-face conversation.
  • Write the next great novel.
  • Create art.
  • Tell us who we are.

Sorry. You’re on your own.
