You Really Should Stand Up

I'll kill you if all this sitting doesn't kill me first.

Literally, stand up. Right now? Yes, right now. Study after study has shown that sitting increases your chance of dying sooner. You can’t even exercise away the effects of all that sitting you do. So what kind of a future is in store for a country filled with people who on average spend nearly 3 hours a day watching television? Here’s the most shocking finding of one of the studies:

“…people who sat more than 11 hours a day had a 40% higher risk of dying in the next three years than people who sat less than four hours a day. This was after adjusting for factors such as age, weight, physical activity and general health status, all of which affect the death risk.”


Remember this the next time you catch yourself spending an entire morning sitting in your cubicle at work, or when you crash on your couch after a long day of work (which you probably spent sitting). Sitting will kill you.

It’s a beautiful day outside. The last thing I want to do is sit inside and labor over a long post. I’ll save that for another day. Meanwhile, I’m standing.
